Sunderland have appointed Regis Le Bris as their new Head Coach on a three-year contract.
Le Bris’ arrival comes after two seasons in charge at Ligue 1’s Lorient who were dramatically relegated from France’s top flight purely on head-to-head away goals scored against Metz, having both finished on 29 points and a goal difference of -23 after 34 games last season.
Le Bris had previously taken Lorient to 10th position in the 2022-23 season which marked his first season as manager, having been closely involved with the club in the preceding decade.
The 48 year-old has now accepted the opportunity to manage Sunderland on a three-year contract until June 2027, after the Black Cats undertook a lengthy search following Michael Beale’s sacking in February 2024 after just 12 matches in charge.
Speaking of his new role, Le Bris admitted that he is “honoured” to be appointed as Head Coach of Sunderland, and has vowed to immerse himself “in the culture of the Club and the city.”
Le Bris also spoke of his belief in his new squad and is keen to punch above their weight this season plus entertain fans.
“I recognise the potential of our team, a group that has seen both successes and more difficult times. Our journey together has only just begun, and I am ambitious about what we can achieve.
“I want us to bring joy to our fans, not only through results, but also through our style of play, and I’m convinced that with commitment and hard work, we can write an exciting new chapter.”
Sunderland’s Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman added that he is “delighted” to sign a “thoughtful and detailed” manager in Le Bris, who fits the club’s ambitions for the new season and beyond.
“He is aligned with delivering our playing identity and he shares our ambition to win, as well as our passion for talent development. We are excited by the new ideas Régis will bring to Sunderland and look forward to supporting him in his new role.”
Chairman, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus thanked fans for having “patience and support” over the last few months as he explained that he wanted to find a manager “who could build on the foundations we have established and play an integral part in fulfilling our long-term ambitions.”
Le Bris and Sunderland will find out their new schedule for the 2024-25 Championship season on Wednesday 26 June at 9am BST, then their First Round Carabao Cup opposition on Thursday 27 June at 11:30am live on Sky Sports News.
