Sunderland have signed midfielder, Alan Browne on a free transfer.
Brown left Preston last month upon expiration of his contract having scored 46 goals in 414 appearances for the Lilywhites across a decade-long stint at Deepdale, during which he helped the club win promotion to the Championship in 2014-15 season.
The 29 year-old however will remain in the second tier as he moves to Sunderland on a free transfer, as the Black Cats prepare for their first season under Regis Le Bris.
Addressing his decision to move to Sunderland, Browne commented: “It’s a big change for me after being at Preston for such a long time, but it’s brilliant to be here. Sunderland is one of the biggest clubs in England and I can’t wait to get started.
“I captained Preston for some time, so hopefully I can bring those leadership qualities to the Stadium of Light and add to what is a very talented squad.”
Sunderland Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman added: “Alan is a dynamic and versatile midfielder, who will complement the players within our squad and bring fresh qualities to our midfield.
“His availability is something we have closely followed throughout the last eight months and his ambition was at the forefront of our discussions.
“He believes he can fulfil those ambitions at Sunderland and after seeing our potential, he wants to play an important role in creating future success. We are delighted to welcome him to the Club.”
Browne could make his competitive debut for the Black Cats away at Cardiff City on Saturday 10 August in the Championship, before Sunderland head to Deepdale to face his former team – Preston on Tuesday 13 August in First Round of 2024-25 Carabao Cup.
Both fixtures will be live on Sky Sports +, whilst Browne’s potential home bow will take place against Sheffield Wednesday at Stadium of Light on Sunday 18 August at 12pm BST, live on Sky Sports Football.
