Gareth Southgate has named his 26-man England squad for UEFA Euro 2024.
Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale were immediately named in the goalkeeper selection as first and second-choice goalkeepers respectively.
Southgate has added Crystal Palace’s Dean Henderson as third-choice goalkeeper, which meant that Burnley’s James Trafford won’t be part of the final squad.
Harry Maguire is the big absentee in defence after he featured in every Qualifier plus at England’s last three major tournaments, but has failed to prove his fitness in time following a recent calf injury.
Liverpool youngster, Jarell Quansah meanwhile won’t play any further part after he failed to feature in friendlies against Bosnia & Herzegovina plus Iceland.
Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite has too missed out in defence despite his substitute appearance against Bosnia & Herzegovina.
In midfield, James Maddison and Curtis Jones have missed out but Man Utd’s Kobbie Mainoo and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton are in the England senior squad at a major tournament for the first time in their careers.
Mainoo enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with five goals and one assist in 32 appearances for Utd, which included a winning goal in their FA Cup Final victory over local rivals, Man City.
Wharton meanwhile only stepped up to Premier League football in February 2024 after he joined Palace from Blackburn Rovers, and quickly established himself as a regular first-team starter with three assists in 16 appearances.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher and Declan Rice complete the midfield selection.
Up front, Jack Grealish has been omitted from the selection despite having played at Euro 2020 and 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, Anthony Gordon, Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins are selected for their first major tournament amongst the forward selection.
Phil Foden, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka are the only forwards from England’s 2022 FIFA World Cup squad to retain their places for the Euros, with Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford dropped due to poor form which saw them snubbed from the preliminary squad selection
Callum Wilson – who was part of the World Cup selection – meanwhile missed out due to a lengthy chest injury this season, despite having returned to first-team action for Newcastle in the closing weeks of their Premier League campaign.
England will open their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on Sunday 16 June in Gelsenkirchen at 8pm UK Time, followed by a clash against Denmark in their second group match on Thursday 20 June at 5pm in Frankfurt with both matches live on BBC One in the UK.
Southgate’s Three Lions will conclude their group stage with an encounter against Slovenia in Cologne on Tuesday 25 June at 8pm, with that game broadcast live on ITV1 for UK-based viewers.
