Miedema Announces Arsenal Exit

Netherlands forward, Vivianne Miedema has announced that she will leave Arsenal at the end of 2023-24 season.

Miedema’s departure brings her seven-year stay in North London to an end during which she has scored 125 goals and created 50 assists in 172 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions.

The 27 year-old also helped Arsenal win 2018-19 Women’s Super League (WSL) title plus was part of their title-winning 2017-18 WSL Cup squad, although injury prevented her from participating in the Gunners’ success in the latter competition in the last two seasons.

Miedema will also leave Arsenal as the all-time top goalscorer in the WSL with 79 goals in 101 appearances.

The Netherlands forward took to Instagram to announce her exit in a video clip in which she described having played for Arsenal as “special” and an “absolute honour” as she prepares to move on to a new challenge.

Arsenal’s Sporting Director, Edu Gaspar issued the following statement upon Miedema’s announcement: “On behalf of everyone at the club, we thank Viv for her huge contribution towards the success of the team during her seven years with us.

“Viv’s goals and overall performances as an Arsenal player have been of the highest quality, and she has created so many wonderful memories for us over the years. We wish Viv and her family the best of health and happiness for the future.”

Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley added that Miedema has earned her place in the heart of Arsenal fans through her performances.

“Since joining us in 2017, Viv has taken on a special place in the hearts of our supporters, who I’m sure will have many fond memories of her time at Arsenal. Viv leaves with our best wishes for the future after seven memorable years here.”

Although she has been sidelined in recent months with a knee injury, Miedema is expected to be at Meadow Park one last time to watch Arsenal face Brighton in their final match of the WSL season on Saturday 18 May.
