2023-24 Premier League: Week 36 – Liverpool vs Tottenham

Liverpool host top-four chasing Tottenham at Anfield in a pivotal Premier League clash.

Liverpool will stay third regardless of the result and likewise for fifth-placed Tottenham, but if Aston Villa beat Brighton in mid-afternoon then Spurs must win to keep their Champions League qualification chances alive.

Virgil Van Dijk is a doubt for Liverpool after he struggled to fully train this week.

Conor Bradley (ankle) could return but Ben Doak (knee), Joel Matip (ACL), Diogo Jota and Thiago Alcantara (both muscle) remain absent.

Tottenham have no fresh injury concerns to report following their defeat at Chelsea on Thursday evening.

Fraser Forster (foot), Destiny Udogie (quad), Ben Davies (calf), Ryan Sessegnon, Timo Werner (both hamstring) and Manor Solomon (knee) remain absent

When is Kick-Off?

Liverpool host Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday 5 May at 4:30pm BST, live on Sky Sports in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Liverpool have lost one of their last 12 league meetings against Tottenham (W8, D3, L1).
  • Tottenham are winless in their last 12 league visits to Anfield (D4, L8).
  • Spurs’ Son Heung Min has scored in each of his last three visits to Liverpool at Anfield (D1, L2).
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold has created more through balls in the league than any other Liverpool player this season (22).
  • Tottenham are looking to avoid suffering four consecutive league defeats for the first time since a six-match losing streak between October – November 2004.

Prediction

Having seen their title ambitions ended by a scrappy draw at West Ham where they were wasteful yet fought back to lead briefly, Liverpool now need to just knuckle down and try to finish the season on a high to give Jurgen Klopp a strong farewell.

Tottenham meanwhile can’t afford to be as sluggish as they were at Chelsea with sloppy end product because if they produce more of the same and Villa win earlier in the day, I can see them getting punished and it becomes a case of trying to cling on to fifth.

Either way there is plenty of improvement needed for both teams but I do fancy Liverpool to get the win unless Tottenham turn up and deliver a strong clinical display like we saw in the second half of the North London derby against Arsenal last weekend.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Tottenham

Result: Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham
