2023-24 Premier League: Week 35 – Newcastle vs Sheffield United

Top-six chasing Newcastle United host Sheffield United at St James’ Park.

Victory would return Eddie Howe’s Magpies to sixth if Manchester United lose elsewhere, whilst Sheffield Utd will be relegated if they lose.

Chris Wilder’s Blades though can be relegated even in the event that they draw or win if Nottingham Forest can match or better their result when they play on Sunday.

When is Kick-Off?

Newcastle host Sheffield Utd at St James’ Park in a 3pm BST kick-off on Saturday 27 April, untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Newcastle have lost one of their last five meetings against Sheffield Utd (W4, L1).
  • Sheffield Utd have won one of four previous Premier League trips to Newcastle (W1, L3).
  • Newcastle have kept clean sheets in all three of their Premier League wins at home to Sheffield Utd.
  • Alexander Isak has scored six goals in Newcastle’s last four home matches (W3, D1).
  • Ben Brereton Diaz has been caught offside more than any other Sheffield Utd player this season, having been found offside on 11 occasions in 1o league appearances.

Prediction

Having lost control of sixth position with a lacklustre defeat at Palace where they failed to take their chances nor match the hosts’ energy and intensity, Newcastle now need to just regroup and step it up a gear on their home turf.

Sheffield Utd meanwhile are surely on the cusp of going down but they certainly gave Man Utd a fierce fight but to concede twice from in the lead is poor, whilst a number of wasted chances also proved costly in a game where they might of got at least a draw if had defended better.

Howe’s Magpies though should have enough quality to edge past Sheffield Utd if can play like they have done lately, but the Blades surely will try and provide a difficult test especially if can build upon the midweek positives.

Prediction: Newcastle United 2-1 Sheffield United

Result: Newcastle United 5-1 Sheffield United
