Roundup of a potentially season-defining matchweek in the 2023-24 Premier League title race.

Second-half goals from Mateo Kovacic, Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Josko Gvardiol fired Manchester City to a 5-1 win over third-bottom Luton, after Daiki Hashioka put the hosts ahead with a second minute own-goal before Ross Barkley scored a late consolatory goal for the Hatters.

Pep Guardiola’s City subsequently stayed top after Arsenal slipped to second with a surprise 2-0 loss at home to fourth-placed Aston Villa, as Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins struck late for Unai Emery’s Villains who did the league double over his former team this season.

Eberechi Eze’s 14th minute winning strike saw Crystal Palace stun third-placed Liverpool at Anfield, as Jurgen Klopp’s Reds found themselves two points off the top and again behind Arsenal on goal difference.

Tottenham fell to fifth with a shock 4-0 loss at Newcastle to dent their hopes of Champions League qualification, although Alexander Isak’s brace plus goals from Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar lifted Eddie Howe’s Magpies up to sixth.

Down in the relegation zone, Oliver Arblaster’s own-goal and Frank Onyeka’s injury-time effort condemned rock-bottom Sheffield United to a 2-0 loss at Brentford.

Burnley missed a chance to boost their survival hopes with a 1-1 draw at home to Brighton – having initially led through Josh Brownhill’s 74th minute opening goal before Arijanet Muric put Sander Berg’s backpass into his own net to gift the Seagulls a lucky point five minutes later.

Nottingham Forest moved one point clear of the drop after Morgan Gibbs-White and Danilo had put them ahead in an eventual 2-2 draw at home to Wolves, with the visitors’ Matheus Cunha having struck either side of Forest’s two goals.

Elsewhere, Bruno Fernandes’ brace spared Manchester United’s blushes in a nervy 2-2 draw at Bournemouth, with the Cherries having twice led through Dominic Solanke and Justin Kluivert who both benefitted from assists by Marcos Senesi.

Andreas Pereira’s brace helped Fulham claim a first Premier League double over West Ham with a 2-0 victory at the London Stadium.

Finally, Cole Palmer netted four goals as Chelsea thrashed Everton 6-0 at Stamford Bridge, whilst Nicolas Jackson and Alfie Gilchrist were also on the scoresheet for the hosts.
