2025 UEFA Women’s Euro Qualifying: Republic of Ireland vs England

Republic of Ireland look to ignite their 2025 UEFA Women’s Euro Qualifying campaign against England at Aviva Stadium.

Victory would put Ireland second if Sweden fail to beat France, whilst England could go top with a win if the Swedes and French draw or if Sweden win but the Lionesses score more goals.

Ireland have called up Emily Whelan to the squad after Jess Ziu withdrew from the squad, following her absence in their defeat away to France due to a hamstring injury.

England have no fresh injury concerns to report after their 1-1 draw against Sweden.

When is Kick-Off?

Ireland host England at Aviva Stadium on Tuesday 9 April in a 7:30pm BST kick-off, live on ITV1 in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Ireland are winless in six previous meetings against England in all competitions (L6).
  • England have won their last four visits to Ireland in all competitions without conceding (L4).
  • Ireland have never scored at home in three previous meetings against England.
  • Ireland are yet to score a goal in 2024 after three matches (D1, L2), during which they conceded three goals within the first half.
  • England have scored first in four of their last six matches in all competitions (W4, D1, L1), during which they kept just one clean sheet in those games.

Prediction

Having produced a gutsy resilient defensive display to only narrowly lose to France despite getting outclassed from start to finish with just one shot all game, Ireland know that they must now show their attacking quality if want to fight for automatic qualification.

England meanwhile have work of their own to do because their defence looked shaky against Sweden and midfield was pretty scrappy with sloppy possession despite a clinical opening goal, so there is room for improvement in a game where they’re favourites to win.

Ireland’s defence however could prove a challenge to break down as France already discovered but with England’s depth of goalscoring quality, I can’t see them having too much trouble if they can step up and show more composure.

Prediction: ROI 0-3 England

Result: ROI 0-2 England
