2023-24 Premier League: Week 31 – Newcastle vs Everton

Newcastle United continue their push for European qualification against relegation-battling Everton at St James’ Park.

Victory would see Newcastle climb to seventh if West Ham lose elsewhere, whilst Everton can go 15th with a win.

Anthony Gordon is suspended for Newcastle after he was red carded in their dramatic win over West Ham.

Jamaal Lascelles (ACL) is ruled out whilst Tino Livramento (ankle), Miguel Almiron (knee) and Kieran Trippier (calf) are doubtful for selection.

Nick Pope (shoulder), Matt Targett (hamstring), Sven Botman (ACL), Lewis Miley (back), Sandro Tonali (suspension), Callum Wilson (chest) and Joelinton (quad) remain ruled out.

Everton could welcome Vitaliy Mykolenko back into contention after he missed their defeat at Bournemouth due to illness.

Arnaut Danjuma, Lewis Dobbin (both ankle) and Dele Alli (hip) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Prediction

Despite showing gut and fighting spirit to snatch a pretty crazy comeback win against West Ham, Newcastle now have further injuries to deal with but if they can cut out the defensive mistakes, they could still mount a serious push for an Europa League spot given their decent run-in.

Everton meanwhile can’t afford to keep wasting their end product because they were again toothless in front of goal until a brief late equaliser in their loss at Bournemouth, yet they do defensively make life difficult for the opposition which isn’t enough when need wins now.

Newcastle though will have fresh belief after their late comeback and I can’t see them allowing that new-found momentum to slip here, no matter how difficult Everton try to make it defensively but the Toffees don’t have the attacking momentum that the hosts do.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-0 Everton

Result: Newcastle 1-1 Everton
