Max Verstappen claimed pole position for 2024 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Australia.

Verstappen outfought Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz to claim pole position following a close Qualifying scrap as Sainz enjoyed a strong return from appendicitis surgery in Saudi Arabia a fortnight ago.

Home heroes, Oscar Piastri and Daniel Ricciardo meanwhile endured contrasting fortunes, whilst there was a shock Q2 elimination.

Now, here is a roundup of all the action across FP3 and Qualifying.

McLaren’s Piastri and Lando Norris were first out on track but whilst they and several other drivers focused on the soft tyre, Red Bull and Ferrari dominated the opening half-hour on the medium tyre with the latter’s Carlos Sainz top with 1m 16.791 at the halfway mark.

A quiet period in proceedings unfolded mid-session as everyone left their Qualifying simulations until the end, with Leclerc fastest at the checkered flag with 1m 16.714 and just 0.020 seconds quicker than Max Verstappen.

Sainz rounded out the top three despite having set his best lap time on the medium tyre, ahead of; Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Fernando Alonso, Sergio Perez and Piastri as the top eight were split by 0.373s.

Williams’ Alex Albon meanwhile finished 13th fastest despite having switched to the chassis of his teammate, Logan Sargeant who consequently was withdrawn from the rest of the weekend after FP2 following Albon’s FP1 crash.

Qualifying

Q1

Albon was first out on track but his first lap was deleted after he exceeded track limits as Verstappen set the pace with 1m 17.478, but he was soon usurped by Leclerc who went top with 1m 17.244 and 0.045s quicker than Sainz until Alonso displaced the pair with 1m 16.991.

Sainz responded with a Q1 topping time of 1m 16.731 in the 11th minute to go quickest ahead of Leclerc whilst various drivers reported track evolution, from understeering for Verstappen to brake issues for Russell.

Once everyone had set a lap time, the bottom four compromised of Albon, Zhou, Ocon and Gasly, although Gasly improved to 14th on his second flier in the 14th minute.

As the checkered flag fell, Zhou qualified last behind Ricciardo as the home hero saw his final lap deleted for exceeding track limits, whilst Gasly qualified 17th behind Hulkenberg in 16th position.

Once everyone delivered their first Q2 laps, the elimination zone compromised of: Albon, Tsunoda, Magnussen, Bottas and Ocon, whilst Sainz lowered the fastest lap of Q2 to 1m 16.189 out at the front.

At the checkered flag, Albon was eliminated in 12th position ahead of Bottas, Magnussen and Ocon whilst Tsunoda scraped through at the expense of Hamilton, who suffered his worst Qualifying result in Melbourne since 2010.
