2023-24 Sky Bet Championship: Week 36 Roundup

Roundup of the latest Championship action as the battles for promotion and survival continued to stay tight.

Jamie Vardy’s 13th minute rebound header saw Leicester end their three-match losing streak with a 1-0 victory at Sunderland.

Leif Davis netted a 89th minute winner as second-placed Ipswich fought off Bristol City in a 3-2 thriller at Portman Road to stay three points off the top, as Ahmed Al-Hamadi and Conor Chaplin’s equalisers cancelled out goals from Anis Mehmeti and Tommy Conway.

Daniel James’ 33rd minute strike saw third-placed Leeds scrape past third from bottom Stoke as the visiting Potters finished with ten men, following Ben Pearson’s red card in the 86th minute for a second bookable offence.

Southampton remain fourth but their home clash against Preston North End at St Mary’s Stadium was postponed due to a fire at a nearby building.

West Brom remain fifth following a 2-2 draw at QPR after the Hoops’ Sam Field netted twice against his former team to earn the West London club a vital point in their fight for survival, having fell 2-1 behind at half-time to goals from Mikey Johnston and Grady Diangana for the Baggies.

Hull round out the top six after Ozan Tufan’s first-half goal was cancelled out by Lukas Jutkiewicz in a 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham City.

Down in the relegation zone, Rotherham remain rock bottom following a 5-0 loss at Coventry as Ellis Simms netted a hat-trick, whilst Joel Latibeaudiere and Fabio Tavares also found the net.

Sheffield Wednesday continued to stay second bottom albeit now on goal difference after Djeidi Gamma poked in from Ike Ugbo’s cross to beat Plymouth at Hillsborough.

Huddersfield remain outside of the drop zone on goal difference after a 1-0 loss at Cardiff as Famara Diedhiou scored a 30th minute winner for the Bluebirds.

Elsewhere, Emmanuel Latte Lath and Lukas Engel fired Middlesbrough to a comeback 3-1 home win against Norwich after Marcus Forss cancelled out Ashley Barnes’ opening goal, following Borja Sainz’s red card with the Canaries having been 1-0 up at the time of his dismissal.

Ryan Porteous’s equaliser saw Watford claim a 1-1 draw at home to Swansea after Ryan Andrews’ headed the Swans ahead at half-time with an own-goal.

Finally, Sammie Szmodics scored his 20th league goal of the season to rescue Blackburn a 1-1 draw at home to Millwall after Michael Obafemi scored his first goal for the Lions.
