2023-24 Sky Bet Championship: Week 17 Roundup

Roundup of the latest Sky Bet Championship action as Leicester remained top of the table. 

League leaders, Leicester returned to winning ways with a 2-0 home win over Watford, courtesy of Jamie Vardy’s second-half brace – including an injury-time penalty after he was fouled by Daniel Bachmann who was consequently red carded for the Hornets.

Second-placed Ipswich slipped three points behind the Foxes following a 2-0 defeat at West Brom, as Darnell Furlong’s header and Grady Diangana’s sweeping finish saw the Baggies claim a comfortable home win to move up to fifth.

Leeds stay third but were held to a 1-1 draw at third-bottom Rotherham after Crysencio Summerville’s sixth-minute opening goal was cancelled out by Hakeem Odoffin.

Southampton consequently missed a chance to go third after Adam Armstrong’s goal was cancelled out by Ben Jackson’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield.

10-man Preston rounded out the top six despite losing 2-1 at home to seventh-placed Cardiff, having led through Milutin Osmajic prior to Robbie Brady’s red card before injury-time goals from Karlan Grant and Ike Ugbo struck in injury time for the Bluebirds.

Hull sit eighth after second-half goals from Jaden Philogene and Tyler Morton rescued a 2-2 draw at Swansea, after the hosts had led at half-time through Jamie Paterson and Jerry Yates.

Down in the relegation zone, Sheffield Wednesday remain rock-bottom after a 2-1 defeat at Birmingham City where they led through George Byers, only for Juninho Bacuna and Jordan James to turn the game around for the Blues.

Hwang Ui-Jo struck a 21st minute winner as Norwich scraped past second-bottom QPR in a closely-fought clash at Carrow Road.

Coventry moved seven points clear of the bottom three with a 3-0 win away at Millwall, which saw Matty Godden, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Ben Sheaf find the net.

Elsewhere, Scott Wharton’s fourth minute header plus late strikes from Andrew Moran and Sammie Szmodics saw Blackburn win 3-0 away at Stoke to move up to tenth.

Mark Sykes struck a 67th minute winner as Bristol City beat Middlesbrough 3-2 at Ashton Gate, having led through Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Tommy Conway’s first half goals before Zak Vyner’s own-goal and Matt Crooks’ strike brought the visitors level.

Finally, Morgan Whittaker and Finn Azaz both converted chances created by Luke Cundle as Plymouth stunned ninth-placed Sunderland 2-0 at Home Park.
