Manchester United have signed midfielder, Irene Guerrero from Atletico Madrid on a permanent transfer.
Guerrero joined Atletico Madrid last summer from Levante but only contributed three assists in 23 matches in all competitions.
The 26 year-old however was part of Spain’s FIFA Women’s World Cup winning squad this summer, in which she made substitute appearances during wins against Zambia, Switzerland and Netherlands and was an unused substitute during Spain’s win over England in the Final.
Guerrero however has decided to depart her home country where she began her career with Real Betis before she went on to play for Levante and Atletico, in a move to develop her game internationally with Utd.
Speaking about her move to Old Trafford, Guerrero commented: “I feel very happy and very privileged to be here.
“I am very proud to be part of the Manchester United family and look forward to achieving all our goals together.”
Utd manager, Marc Skinner added that he is “delighted” to sign Guerrero who will add extra quality in midfield, as he explained: “Irene is a World Cup winner whose quality is an excellent addition to our team.
“The experience she brings, both domestically and internationally, will be key as we pursue success across the multiple competitions we face this season.”
Utd’s Head of Women’s Football, Polly Bancroft meanwhile iterated that Guerrero’s arrival marks “the ambition of Manchester United Women,” who will look to challenge in their first-ever UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign alongside domestic competitions.
Guerrero could make her debut for Man Utd away to Aston Villa on Sunday 1 October in a 12:30pm BST kick-off live on BBC Two in the UK.
