England’s Mary Earps and Rachel Daly has headed up 2023 FIFA Best Shortlists, celebrating the best footballers of 2023.
Mary Earps has been nominated for FIFA Best Goalkeeper after she won the Golden Glove at this summer’s Women’s World Cup, which followed up a successful domestic season for Manchester United with 14 clean sheets in the Women’s Super League.
Earps however faces tough competition from Spain’s Catalina Coll and Sandra Panos, although Panos was omitted from Spain’s title-winning Women’s World Cup squad due to a player feud with now-sacked manager – Jorge Vilda.
Mackenzie Arnold, Ann-Katrin Berger, Christiane Endler and Zecira Musovic round out the goalkeeping nominations.
Daly meanwhile has been nominated for FIFA Best Women’s Player after scoring 36 goals in 37 appearances for Aston Villa and England across all competitions last season, as the Lionesses defended their Arnold Clark Cup crown.
Alex Greenwood, Lauren James and Keira Walsh are also up for Best Women’s Player award, although they face tough competition from Spain’s Aitana Bonmati and Jennifer Hermoso, whilst Japan’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Golden Boot winner, Hinata Miyazawa is also shortlisted.
Chelsea Women’s manager, Emma Hayes is one of two club managers nominated for FIFA Best Women’s Coach alongside Barcelona’s Jonatan Giraldez.
Spain’s title winning manager, Vilda has been snubbed with England’s Sarina Wiegman, Sweden’s Peter Gerhardsson and Australia’s Tony Gustavsson rounding out the shortlist, which meant that Vilda is the only manager of the top-four nations at the World Cup not to make the shortlist.
Elsewhere, Manchester City’s and Norway striker, Erling Haaland heads the FIFA Best Men’s Player shortlist but faces tough competition from Lionel Messi, as the Argentinean seeks to defend his title.
Haaland’s teammates, Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri are nominated as is their ex teammate, Ilkay Gundogan who scored the winner in the FA Cup Final before he left to join Barcelona later in the summer.
Declan Rice is the only English representative on the shortlist after he captained West Ham to UEFA Europa Conference League title, prior to his move to Arsenal later in the summer.
City’s Ederson headlines the FIFA Best Men’s Goalkeeper shortlist but faces competition from Yassine Bounou, Thibaut Courtois, Andre Onana and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Pep Guardiola heads up the FIFA Best Men’s Coach shortlist after he led City to a treble but faces competition from Ange Postecoglou – after the Australian led Celtic to a domestic treble which secured him a move to Tottenham.
Italy’s Simone Inzaghi and Luciano Spalletti are also nominated alongside Barcelona boss, Xavi.
