Scotland vs England Friendly Preview

Scotland welcome England to Hampden Park in an 150th Anniversary Heritage Friendly Match.

This friendly between the Auld Enemies comes as part of 150th anniversary celebrations to mark the first-ever international match, which saw Scotland hold England to a 0-0 draw in November 1972 at Hamilton Crescent.

Scotland have no fresh injury concerns to report following their away win against Cyprus, although manager – Steve Clarke could rest Scott McTominay and John McGinn amongst others to give fringe players a chance.

England also have no fresh injury concerns to report after their 1-1 draw away to Ukraine last weekend.

Eddie Nketiah is looking to make his senior debut after he was omitted from the matchday squad against Ukraine.

When is Kick-Off?

Scotland host England at Hampden Park on Tuesday 12 September in a 7:45pm BST kick-off, live on Channl 4 in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Scotland have won just one of their last 12 meetings against England in all competitions (W1, D3, L8).
  • England are unbeaten in their last five visits to Scotland in all competitions (W3, D2).
  • England’s opening goal in their last two away matches against Scotland were scored by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (W1, D1), who isn’t part of this squad.
  • Scott McTominay has scored five goals in his last three appearances at home for Scotland (W3).
  • England have conceded one goal in two of their three away matches in 2023 (W2, D1).

Prediction

2023 so far has been Scotland’s year with a series of impressive performances which was evident by how comfortably they dominated Cyprus in the first-half, before controlling the second-half to put themselves on the cusp of UEFA Euro 2024 qualification.

England meanwhile just failed to click up front because for all of their possession and dominance on the ball, their attack was simply frustrating to watch with uncharacteristic wasteful end product which was a marked contrast from the team who tore North Macedonia to shreds in June.

Now if England turn up with the same attitude and awful final touch, I do feel like Scotland might just edge this if they are as physical and dynamic in their overall play as seen in recent games.

Southgate however should have enough quality up his sleeve to reignite England’s attacking gears so a draw might well be the best result.

Prediction: Scotland 1-1 England

Result: Scotland 1-3 England
