2023-24 Premier League: Week Four – Burnley vs Tottenham

Struggling Burnley welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Turf Moor in a huge clash at opposite ends of the Premier League table.

Victory would see Burnley climb out of the relegation zone, whilst Tottenham could go top with a win if Manchester City and West Ham both fail to win elsewhere during the weekend.

Burnley’s Aaron Ramsey faces a late fitness test after he suffered a knock during their midweek Carabao Cup win at Nottingham Forest.

Hjalmar Ekdal and Vitinho will both miss out with knee injures.

Jordan Beyer, Michael Bobafemi (both hamstring), Anass Zaroury (suspension) and Darko Churlinov (unspecified) remain absent.

Tottenham could have Destiny Udogie in contention after he recovered from a minor knee injury suffered during last weekend’s win at Bournemouth.

Giovani Lo Celso is ruled out with a quad injury.

Ryan Sessegnon (hamstring), Bryan Gil (groin), Rodrigo Bentancur (knee) and Alfie Whiteman (ankle) remain ruled out.

When is Kick-Off?

Burnley meet Tottenham at Turf Moor on Saturday 2 September in a 3pm BST kick-off, untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Burnley have claimed four points from their last six league meetings against Tottenham (W1, D1, L4).
  • Tottenham are unbeaten in four of their last six visits to Burnley (W3, D1, L2).
  • Each of the last three meetings between Burnley and Tottenham at Turf Moor in all competitions have been settled by 1-0 result, with Spurs winning twice to Burnley’s one.
  • No Burnley player is yet to make a last man tackle this season in the Premier League.
  • James Maddison has attempted more shots than any other Tottenham player in their three opening league matches.

Prediction

Having been served two difficult opening defeats where their defensive sloppiness proved their downfall, Burnley now need to regroup and sort out their issues at the back whilst their issues up front is no better – with poor end product to quality attacking moves proving costly.

Villa in particular exposed Burnley’s defensive vulnerability with some excellent high-intensity attacking play, which often left plenty of space which were capitalised upon and can’t be repeated against strong opposition like Spurs who surely will punish such errors.

Tottenham meanwhile were absolutely clinical against Bournemouth in a strong well executed display in their last league game, although they were made to work hard in their surprise defeat at Fulham on penalties in midweek.

Ange Postecoglou however did rotate his squad so with the likes of Maddison and Son Heung-min back in the starting line-up, I do expect them to bounce back with a strong result if can play their recent high-intensity attack.

Prediction: Burnley 1-2 Tottenham

Result: Burnley 2-5 Tottenham
