2023-24 Premier League: Week Three – Sheffield United vs Manchester City

Sheffield United chase their first win of the season as reigning champions, Manchester City visit Bramall Lane.

Victory would see Sheffield Utd climb as high as 13th should Aston Villa lose elsewhere, whilst a win would see Man City move to the summit of the table.

George Baldock is set to return for Sheffield Utd after he missed their defeat at Nottingham Forest with a calf injury.

Max Lowe (ankle), Ben Anis Slimane (hamstring), Daniel Jebbison (groin) and Oli McBurnie (foot) are set for late fitness tests.

Rhys Norrington-Davies (hamstring), Jayden Bogle, Ismael Coulibaly (both knee), John Fleck (leg) and Rhian Brewster (hamstring) are ruled out.

Man City could welcome Bernardo Silva back into contention following a bout of illness.

New signing, Jeremy Doku could be in line for his debut after he joined from Rennes in midweek.

John Stones (muscle) and Kevin De Bruyne (hamstring) both remain sidelined.

When is Kick-Off?

Sheffield United host Man City at Bramall Lane in a 2pm BST kick-off on Sunday 27 August, live on Sky Sports in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Sheffield Utd are winless in ten previous Premier League meetings against Man City (D3, L7).
  • Man City are unbeaten in five previous Premier League visits to Sheffield Utd (W4, D1).
  • Four of Sheffield Utd’s last five losses to Man City were by 1-0 results, except for a 2-0 defeat in December 2019.
  • In their opening two matches, no Sheffield Utd player has made more interceptions than John Egan (6).
  • Erling Haaland’s two league goals this season for City were scored on his left foot.

Prediction

Coming into this game off the back of two narrow defeats, Sheffield Utd can feel confident that they could cause issues especially after troubling Forest aside from two sloppy defensive moments against high crosses which proved costly.

Man City meanwhile scraped past Newcastle with a clinical performance where they controlled the game with excellent defending, despite their end product lacking that usual powerful quality but I do expect them to be fired up to get back to their ruthless best.

In fact, I find it hard to go against City here because their form in this fixture is strong but Sheffield Utd might just be tough to break down, so it wouldn’t be little surprise if Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens need to bide their time.

Prediction: Sheffield United 0-2 Manchester City

Result: Sheffield United 1-2 Manchester City
