Ajax have signed forward, Chuba Akpom from Middlesbrough for £12.2m.

Akpom’s move to Ajax comes after he spearheaded Boro from relegation contenders to play-off semi-finalists in the Championship last season, during which he scored 29 goals in 42 appearances.

The 27 year-old’s performances also saw him crowned as Championship Player of the Season at last season’s EFL Awards, plus named in the 2022-23 Championship Team of the Season.

A knee injury however has prevented him from making any appearances for Middlesbrough this season, amidst interest from Lens and Sheffield United until Ajax hijacked their bids to secure him on a five-year contract.

Ajax have paid Boro an initial £10.52m free but add-ons could see the total fee rise to £12.2m if various clauses are met.

“It was a pretty fast deal. There were some other clubs as well, but as soon as Ajax came, I had my mind sorted”, commented Akpom upon his move to the club.

Akpom also received a tour of Ajax’s dressing room and stadium but can’t wait to start scoring goals, as he added: “Sick man. I’m just imagining it, you know… fully packed. I do like the goals the most. The goals are always my favourite thing because of scoring.”

The 27 year-old will wear the number 10 shirt which has previously been worn by many Ajax legends with Dusan Tadic, Hakim Ziyech and Steven Pienaar amongst the best-known players, due to having also represented Premier League clubs during their careers.

Akpom however had one final message for Boro supporters who had supported him over the last three years, during which he scored 34 goals in 82 appearances.

Addressing Boro supporters, Akpom issued the following farewell statement: “I’d like to thank everyone connected with Boro and especially a big thanks to the fans for the support and love they have given me.

“Last season was full of memories I’ll never forget and I will be forever proud. Everyone knows what I think of Michael Carrick, and I’m sure success is just around the corner.

“For me now, I have an exciting new challenge with one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I can’t wait to get started with Ajax. I’ll still be following the Boro from afar and wish everyone connected with the club all the very best for the future.”

Akpom could make his debut for Ajax on Saturday 19 August away to Excelsior in the Eredivisie, although his home bow won’t come until 31 August in this season’s Europa League Play-Off.
