Lee Bell feels that Crewe Alexandra received “a real kick up the backside” ahead of their League Two clash against Barnet.
Bell’s Railwaymen come into their home clash against second-placed Barnet on Saturday 31 October sat fourth in the table, after they suffered a brutal 5-1 defeat at Chesterfield last weekend.
Bell consequently feels that loss served as a bum-kicker if they’re to improve and get their automatic promotion back on track, having slipped out of the top three after Cheltenham defeated Newport 1-0 in their clash at Whaddon Road, as he previewed the encounter against Barnet.
“It doesn’t matter who we’re playing; it’s about what we do and the energy we show.
“The quicker the game comes around, the better. We can’t wait.
“It was a real kick up the backside last weekend. We were all disappointed and the ride home was extremely quiet.”
With Crewe having now conceded seven goals and scored just once in their last two matches which ended in away defeats against Exeter and Chesterfield respectively. Bell felt that the losses serve as a reprimand to his players of the standards expected in the basics.
“We’ve generally been really good this season but sometimes you need reminders about doing the basics right.
“In football, you’re going to get kicked in the teeth. But you have to move on and show a response.”
Bell also spoke of his belief that his squad can stop their recent dip and be long-term promotion contenders this season, as he explained that firm conversations have been had and that focus is now on improvements and hard graft.
“This is a good group of players. They work hard and we’ve outlined exactly what we want from them. No fluffiness with wording – it’s been made clear.
“We’ll be fine as long as we’re all dedicated to trying to improve and work hard. We want to show the best side of ourselves, and we’ve got a responsibility to the fans.”
