Roundup of the second week of 2023-24 Sky Bet Championship season, which saw just two teams maintain their winning starts.

Goals from Luke Woolfenden and Kayden Jackson saw Ipswich defeat Stoke City 2-0 at Portman Road to move to the Championship summit.

Stephy Mavididi’s 73rd minute strike from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s pass lifted Leicester up to second, as the Foxes continued their winning start to the new season with a 1-0 win at Huddersfield who slipped to second bottom.

Third-placed Watford headed eight teams sat on four points apiece by virtue of goal difference despite being held to a goalless draw at home to Plymouth who sit just below them in fourth position.

Norwich sit fifth in the table following a dramatic 4-4 thriller at Southampton during which they led on three occasions, only for Adam Armstrong to snatch a draw for the sixth-placed Saints with the second of his penalty brace in injury-time.

Sammie Szmodics’ second-half brace saw seventh-placed Blackburn fight back to draw 2-2 at ten-men Rotherham, after the Millers led through goals from Hakeem Odoffin and Fred Onyedinma but Onyedinma was red carded in the 50th minute for a second offence.

Will Keane and Mads Frokjaer-Jensen both found the net and provided assists for each other as Preston defeated Sunderland 2-1 at Deepdale, despite Jack Clarke equalising through a 31st minute penalty for the Black Cats after he had been fouled by Kian Best.

Down in the relegation zone, Middlesbrough sit rock bottom after losing 3-0 at Coventry as Matty Godden and Haji Wright struck for the hosts, with Darragh Lenihan’s own-goal completing the Teessiders’ disastrous performance.

Juan Delgado and Michael Smith’s goals couldn’t prevent Sheffield Wednesday falling to third bottom in a 4-2 loss at Hull, as Ozan Tufan scored a hat-trick and Aaron Connolly completed the Tigers’ victory at MKM Stadium.

Elsewhere, John Swift’s 64th minute penalty proved enough for West Brom to clinch a 3-2 win at home to Swansea as Harry Darling and Nathan Wood struck late for the Swans, whilst Semi Ajayi’s strike and Carl Rushworth’s own-goal had initially put the hosts in firm control.

Sinclair Armstrong opened the scoring then assisted in Kenneth Paal’s goal as QPR prevailed 2-1 at Cardiff, despite Ike Ugbo having given the Bluebirds late hope of a comeback draw.

Matty James lashed in an injury-time winner from Harry Cornick’s long throw-in as Bristol City edged an emotional contest away to Millwall at The Den, as the hosts paid tribute to late Chairman, John G. Berylson following his death during the off-season.

Finally, Lukas Jutkiewicz’s 91st minute penalty saw Birmingham City battle to a tense home victory over Leeds.
