2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup: Round of 16 – Colombia vs Jamaica

Colombia face Jamaica in an Americas derby at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium in Round of 2016 at 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Colombia have reached this stage for the second time in their history, whilst Jamaica are making their first knockout appearance at a World Cup as both teams chase a maiden Quarter-Final spot.

Manuela Vanegas is suspended for Colombia after she picked up her second booking of the tournament in their Group H loss to Morocco.

Carolina Arias, Catalina Perez and Lorena Bedoya are all just one booking away from a Quarter-Final ban, should Colombia advance beyond this tie.

Jamaica have no fresh injury concerns to report coming into this match.

Atlanta Primus, Deneisha Blackwood and Cheyna Matthews are all one booking away from suspension.

When is Kick-Off?

Colombia face Jamaica at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Melbourne, Australia, on Tuesday 8 August at 9am UK Time, live on ITV1 in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • This is the first time that Colombia are meeting Jamaica at a Women’s World Cup.
  • Jamaica are unbeaten in two of three previous Women’s World Cup meetings against fellow Americas teams (W1, D1, L1), having beaten Panama and drew against Brazil in the Group Stage although they lost to Brazil in 2019 tournament at the Group Stage.
  • Colombia are winless in two previous Women’s World Cup meetings against fellow Americas teams, having drawn 1-1 against Mexico in 2015 and lost 3-0 to USA in 2011 (D1, L1).
  • Linda Caicedo has scored in two of three Women’s World Cup appearances for Colombia at this tournament.
  • Jamaica are yet to concede at this tournament (W1, D2).

Prediction

Despite advancing as Group H winners, Colombia were surprisingly lacklustre against Morocco as if they felt that it was a dead rubber on their part with a toothless attacking display, although they did well to only lose by a single goal.

It is therefore imperative that they quickly reignite their aggressive high-paced counter-attacking quality, especially if want to break down and beat this well-disciplined Jamaican defence which is yet to concede.

Speaking of Jamaica, they’ve been super gutsy in terms of their defensive performances to hold France and Brazil in the Group Stage, but their attack must improve with a more effective clinical end product if want to progress further.

Throw in the feels of an Americas derby for a maiden Quarter-Final appearance at a Women’s World Cup and I do expect this to be close, but Colombia’s attacking threats do look more likely to be the difference especially if extra-time is required.

Prediction: Colombia 1-0 Jamaica

Result: Colombia 1-0 Jamaica
