Simon Thomas has been named as the new host of Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday coverage.
Thomas replaces Jeff Stelling who retired as lead host at the conclusion of last season, having initially planned to retire upon climax of 2021-22 season before he did an one-season U-turn.
This decision also retains familiarity for Sky Sports fans with Thomas having previously presented on Sky Sports News alongside live football coverage, until personal circumstances forced him to stand down in 2018 to focus upon his family.
Speaking about his decision to take over from Stelling on Soccer Saturday, Thomas commented: “When I left Sky in 2018 for very personal reasons, it was always said the door would be open if I ever wanted to return. I never expected that Gillette Soccer Saturday would be the door that would open.
“Being asked to present this iconic show and follow in the footsteps of Jeff Stelling, an absolute giant of sports broadcasting, is a massive honour and one I simply cannot wait to get started on.”
Sky Sports’ Director of Football, Gary Hughes meanwhile explained the decision behind Thomas taking the helm, as he added: “Simon left Sky at the top of his profession as a Premier League presenter, delivering the biggest games to big audiences.
“It’s brilliant to have someone with his experience and credibility back on the team to take Gillette Soccer Saturday into a new era.”
Former referee, Mike Dean will join the panel to provide expert analysis of refereeing decisions across all the action in Premier League, EFL and Scottish football.
Dean described his latest move as “surreal” but believes that now is the time to add a refereeing perspective to the coverage, as he said: “With all the technology available in today’s game, I think it’s crucial that fans understand why decisions have been made, even if they don’t agree with them!”
Hughes added that Dean’s experience will add extra depth to their coverage as he continued: “In his role, he’ll be explaining the big calls and decisions from his unique perspective, providing fans of Gillette Soccer Saturday and our Premier League coverage with greater analysis, insight and understanding.”
Sky Sports also returned that Soccer Saturday will return on Saturday 5 August for the new EFL season but from a new studio, albeit with regular panellists including; Paul Merson, Clinton Morrison, Michael Dawson, Sue Smith, Kris Boyd and Tim Sherwood.
Julian Warren meanwhile will continue as Soccer Special host for midweek matches across the season.
