Jeff Stelling Confirms Soccer Saturday Exit At End of 2021-22 Season

Jeff Stelling has confirmed that he will exit as host of Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday at end of 2021-22 season.

Stelling first hosted Soccer Saturday in 1994 and has gone on to establish himself as one of the programme’s biggest stars, with the Hartlepool born presenter establishing a popular partnership with ex footballer – Chris Kamara over the years.

The 66 year-old has now decided to make “the incredibly difficult decision” to stand down at the end of this season, following the departures of long-standing regular panellists; Matt Le Tissier, Charlie Nicholas and Phil Thompson who all were axed in Summer 2020.

Stelling made the announcement live on today’s edition of Soccer Saturday (30 October) and cooling any potential rumours, he said: “This is my decision – there has been no pressure. Sky have been absolutely brilliant with me, as they always have been.

“I am not intending to retire but it is time to let somebody else have a go at what is the best job in the world.”

Reflecting on his extensive tenure across Sky Sports beyond just hosting Soccer Saturday, Stelling added; “I have loved every moment of my 30 years with Sky, but like every Saturday afternoon the time eventually comes to blow the final whistle,” as the Teesside legend admitted that his run is nearly at full time.

Acknowledging the work of various panellists and those behind-the-scenes, Stelling said: “I am proud to have been part of such a winning team for so long and look forward to the many more special moments on Soccer Saturday for the rest of this season – and perhaps even another promotion push from Hartlepool United.”

Managing Director of Sky Sports, Jonathan Licht paid tribute to Stelling in which he described the veteran broadcaster as “a true broadcasting legend and has been a big part of Sky Sports’ growth and popularity over the last 30 years.”

Licht went on to praise Stelling’s qualities as he said: “Jeff’s pure passion and dedication to the game has set him apart and made Soccer Saturday a fixture for millions of fans every Saturday afternoon.

The goals, the laughs, the red cards and the missed red cards have helped create one of the most popular TV shows in sport and Jeff has been the centrepiece of that.”

Licht also described Stelling as someone who will be “sorely missed” when he stands down at end of season and has vowed to give him a “great send off” worthy of “his remarkable and enduring contribution” to Sky Sports.

Throughout his time at the helm of Soccer Saturday, Stelling has played witness to many iconic moments throughout Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two.
