Defender, Angelo Ogbonna has signed a new one-year contract at West Ham until June 2024.
Ogbonna’s contract expired last week but the Italian has since completed negotiations on a new one-year contract, which sees him remain with the Hammers until June 2024.
Speaking to whufc.com about his decision to stay in East London, Ogbonna commented: “It feels really good to remain with West Ham. I’m really pleased with what we’ve achieved, and I’m pleased with what we did last season.
“I want to thank the Club and, as I always say, I’m here to help. Now I’m here to stay as well and I really want to keep going and pushing on now.”
This season will mark Ogbonna’s ninth season with West Ham and the 35 year-old has praised both club staff and supporters for how they made him “feel like a part of the family here.”
He cited their support as “the most important thing” behind his decision to remain with the club, as he vowed “to keep giving back.”
Ogbonna made 30 appearances last season, of which ten appearances came in the Hammers’ successful UEFA Europa Conference League campaign.
The Italian consequently admitted that he “can never really put into words what West Ham means to me.”
Explaining how much the club means to him personally, Ogbonna added: “This is the Club where I grew up and became a man. This is the Club where I’ve seen my children growing up.
“This is the Club which saw me leave my home country for the first time and experience living away from Italy, being here with my wife, and everyone welcomed us to east London with open arms. That is why, whenever I talk about this Club, I feel so emotional.”
Manager, David Moyes meanwhile is “pleased” to retain Ogbonna for this season as West Ham prepare to return to the UEFA Europa League.
Moyes also spoke of Ogbonna’s impact during his time in charge of the Hammers, as he added: “He is an important player for us, both on and off the pitch, and his experience and character has been extremely valuable for us during my time here.”
Ogbonna has scored 13 goals in 232 appearances for West Ham across all competitions since he joined from Juventus in July 2015.
