Sunderland have signed defender, Jenson Seelt from PSV Eindhoven for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Seelt becomes Sunderland’s fourth signing of this summer’s transfer window alongside; Hemir, Nectar Triantis and Jobe Bellingham, having initially agreed terms on Friday (23 Juune) ahead of his medical which he passed with the transfer officially finalised soon afterwards.

The 20 year-old’s move to Wearside brings his six-year spell at PSV to an end, during which he made 33 appearances for Jong PSV (PSV’s reserve team) in Eerste Divisie – Netherlands’ second tier last season, whilst captaining the team on nine separate occasions.

Seelt in total scored seven goals in 63 appearances for Jong PSV and also featured for the senior team in ten separate matchday squads, having made his first-team debut against PEC Zwolle in May 2022.

Speaking about his decision to move to Sunderland, Seelt commented: “It feels great to be here – Sunderland is a big Club and this is a big opportunity for me, so I can’t wait to get started.”

The 20 year-old also explained what fans can expect from him as he added: “I’m the type of defender who likes to play with the ball at my feet, but I also enjoy an aerial duel and making tackles.

“I’m ready for the challenge and I’m looking forward to playing at the Stadium of Light in front of the supporters.”

Sunderland’s Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman meanwhile iterated that Seelt will add “invaluable experience” to the squad, as Tony Mowbray’s Black Cats look to challenge once again for promotion this season after losing to Luton in last season’s Play-Off Semi-Finals.

Speakman also believes that Seelt’s qualities will help the 20 year-old adapt to the club and English football, as he said: “Naturally comfortable in possession, he also possesses some great defensive attributes that will help him adapt to our playing identity and Championship football.”

Seelt could make his debut for Sunderland at home to Ipswich Town in a 5pm BST kick-off on Sunday 6 August, live on Sky Sports in the UK.
