UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifying: Turkey vs Wales

Turkey meet Wales at Samsun Stadium, Samsun, in Qualifying Group D for UEFA Euro 2024.

Victory or a draw would see Turkey remain top of Group D, whilst Wales can leapfrog their Turkish hosts with victory and move to the Group D summit.

Turkey have no fresh injury concerns to report after their dramatic 3-2 victory over Latvia.

Wales will be without forward, Kieffer Moore after he was red carded in their shock 4-2 home defeat to Armenia.

Millwall striker, Tom Bradshaw could consequently replace Moore in the starting line-up.

Wayne Hennessey meanwhile is expected to replace Danny Ward in goal after his compatriot’s poor display against Armenia.

When is Kick-Off?

Turkey host Wales at Samsun Stadium, Samsun on Monday 19 June in a 9:45pm TT kick-off (7:45pm UK Time), with the match broadcast live on Viaplay 2 in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Turkey have won just one of their three previous meetings against Wales in UEFA European Championship competition (W1, L2), with their win coming 1-0 at home in November 1979.
  • Wales have won just one of their three previous away matches against Turkey (W1, L2), excluding their meeting at UEFA Euro 2020 in Italy in June 2021.
  • Wales have kept four clean sheets in their last five meetings against Turkey in all competitions (W3, D1), with their only game in that run without a clean sheet coming in a 6-4 away loss in August 1997.
  • Turkey have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last seven matches in all competitions (W4, D1, L2).
  • All four of Wales’ goals in this Euro Qualifying campaign have been scored by forwards; Nathan Broadhead, Moore, Daniel James and Harry Wilson.

Prediction

With both teams having suffered contrasting results last time out and top spot at stake, this clash certainly has the potential to be spicy.

Turkey will come into this game full of confidence after their last-gasp winner against Latvia but for all of their attacking quality, they do have serious defensive issues with no clean sheets in their last seven matches which Wales should look to exploit.

Rob Page’s Dragons though must reset after a shock defeat to Armenia where their defensive marking, passing plus handling of turnovers into counter-attacks were shambolic, whilst their attack simply can be summed up as ‘wasteful’.

It is therefore difficult to see which way this game could go but goals are a sure-fire guarantee, so I am going for a high-scoring draw.

Prediction: Turkey 2-2 Wales

Result: Turkey 2-0 Wales
