Midfielder, Mahmoud Dahoud has completed a free transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Dahoud’s move comes after he was released by Borussia Dortmund in May 2023 after six seasons at the Bundesliga club, where he scored five goals in 141 appearances and was part of the team which won 2019 DFL-SuperCup then 2020-21 DFB Pokal.
A shoulder injury however restricted his game time to just ten senior appearances last season in his final campaign for Dortmund.
Dahoud has signed a four-year contract which will see him play for Brighton until June 2027, although he will have to wait until 1 July 2023 before he can officially train with the club because his contract at Dortmund doesn’t officially expire until 30 June.
Speaking about Brighton’s latest arrival, Head Coach – Roberto De Zerbi commented: “I’m excited to have Mahmoud in my team. I wanted him when I was at Sassuolo and I’m sure he is going to be a top player for us.”
Brighton’s Technical Director, David Weir added that the club are “delighted” to sign the Syria-born midfielder, whose “quality and ability” he hopes will add to the midfield options available to De Zerbi in terms of selection and tactics.
Dahoud has also made two senior international appearances for Germany and also graduated through Borussia Mochengladbach’s youth academy, where he scored eight goals in 86 senior appearances prior to his move to Dortmund.
Weir therefore is confident that the 27 year-old will benefit the Seagulls ahead of their first season in Europe – having qualified for the Europa League, as he added: “He’s a quality player, he’s got lots of experience playing at a high level in Germany with great experience in Europe too.”
Dahoud could make his competitive debut for Brighton on Saturday 12 August, as De Zerbi’s Seagulls host Luton Town in a 3pm kick-off at AMEX Stadium in their season-opening Premier League clash.
