Borussia Dortmund welcome Manchester City to Signal Iduna Park in Group G of 2022-23 UEFA Champions League.
Victory would see Man City qualify as Group G winners with one match to spare, whereas Borussia Dortmund can secure qualifcation with a win and potentially move top of the group.
Team News
Donyelll Malen is a doubt for Borussia Dortmund after he missed their Bundesliga win over VFB Stuttgart due to illness.
Marco Reus (knock) and Nico Schlotterbeck (calf) are doubts but Thomas Meunier (cheekbone), Mateu Morey (knee), Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Mahmoud Dahoud (both shoulder) and Sebastien Haller (illness) are all ruled out.
Man City have no fresh injury concerns from their 3-1 win over Brighton on Saturday, as Kyle Walker (groin) and Kalvin Phillips (shoulder) remain absent.
Stat Attack
- Borussia Dortmund have won just one of five previous meetings against Man City (W1, D1, L3).
- Man City have won one of two previous visits to Borussia Dortmund (W1, L1), prevailing 2-1 in April 2021 after having previously lost 1-0 in December 2012.
- Both teams have scored in four of their five previous meetings, with City winning each of their last three clashes by 2-1 result.
- Jude Bellingham has scored in each of Dortmund’s two previous home matches in this group (W1, D1).
- No defender has provided more assists in the Group Stage than Man City’s Joao Cancelo, who has provided four assists in three of their four group matches.
Prediction
Having endured a shaky start to October, Dortmund could of been coming into this match in need of a positive result yet enter this match with seven goals without conceding in their last two matches, although City will pose a tougher test than recent opposition.
Dortmund therefore will need to show resolute solidness and clinical discipline which got them comfortably past Stuttgart on Saturday, whilst their defence should look to try and isolate Erling Haaland if possible given his form when given space to attack.
City meanwhile ended their two match streak without a goal with a clinical win over Brighton, where they were dominant but weathered Brighton’s attacking quality in a fairly open game, which could well be the case here if Dortmund continue their upward trend.
I though do suspect Pep Guardiola and Man City will be eager to wrap up this group here so that they can focus on their domestic title challenge in next few weeks, so I am going for an away win but Dortmund won’t make this an easy contest.
Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Manchester City
Result: Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Manchester City
