Alpine’s Pierre Gasly is eager to “quickly move on” from a disastrous 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend.
A hydraulic leak in Practice, Q1 crash and turbo-related issue in Sprint Qualifying put Gasly on the backfoot throughout last weekend in Baku, although he recovered to 13th in the Sprint then 14th in the race.
Gasly consequently is eager to put his flop weekend behind him heading to Miami, as he commented: “Clearly, it was a very poor weekend and one we are all keen to quickly move on from.
We were on the backfoot from Friday and from there we made it difficult for ourselves to be in contention to score points.
“When this type of weekend happens, it’s important to debrief both collectively and accurately to best understand all the things we could have done better with the sole aim of ensuring we avoid any kind of repeat at all future races.”
This is the first time that Miami has been paired with another race after making its debut as a standalone round in 2022, with Emilia Romagna and Spanish Grands Prix having taken place a fortnight either side of the event.
Gasly therefore is pleased that he has “an immediate opportunity to bounce back in Miami” under a return to the “normal format” of a race weekend, whilst the circuit feels “more conventional” but he iterated that he “must be on it from lap one on Friday” if want to complete for points this weekend.
Setting his target after failing to finish in the top-ten at the last two races, Gasly said: “After two disappointing races at the last two events, I’m so determined to put it right this weekend and return to the top ten as a minimum target.”
Last season though saw Gasly retire in Miami with suspension damage after a collision with McLaren’s Lando Norris.
The Frenchman nevertheless feels that Miami is “a very cool venue with an awesome vibe” as he warned that he has “a bit of unfinished business in Miami” following last year’s race, so is keen to deliver “a positive team result.”
