2022-23 UEFA Europa League Quarter-Finals: Second Leg – Sevilla vs Manchester United

Sevilla welcome Manchester United to Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium in the second leg of their 2022-23 UEFA Europa League Quarter-Final.

With the tie locked at 2-2 apiece on aggregate, victory would see either team advance but a draw would necessitate extra-time and potentially penalties to determine who will advance to the semi-finals.

Gonzalo Montiel is ruled out for Sevilla after he was booked in the first leg at Old Trafford.

Marcos Acuna and Alex Telles could return after they were suspended for Sevilla’s La Liga win against Valencia last weekend.

Pape Gueye (ineligible), Joan Jordan (Achilles) and Tecatito Corona (muscle) remain absent.

Man Utd will be without Bruno Fernandes who is suspended for this match after he received his third European booking of the campaign in the first leg.

Marcel Sabitzer was substituted after the warm-up of Utd’s league win at Nottingham Forest with a knock, although the Austrian is set to feature after returning to first-team training ahead of their flight to Seville.

Marcus Rashford (groin), Tyrell Malacia (knee), Luke Shaw (hamstring) and Scott McTominay (knock) are all doubtful, although Rashford and Shaw have resumed training.

Tom Heaton, Alejandro Garnacho (both ankle), Phil Jones, Donny van de Beek (both knee), Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane (both foot) and Mason Greenwood (personal) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Sevilla host Man Utd at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, Munich, in a 9pm CET (8pm UK Time) kick-off on Thursday 20 April, live on BT Sport in UK.

Stat Attack

  • Sevilla are unbeaten in four previous meetings against Man Utd in all UEFA competitions (W2, D2).
  • Man Utd drew 0-0 in their only previous visit to Sevilla in February 2018, in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie in 2017-18 Champions League.
  • Sevilla have scored twice in each of their last three meetings against Utd in all competitions (W2, D1).
  • Four of Sevilla’s five goals at home in this knockout stage has been scored after half-time (W2).
  • Marcus Rashford has scored four goals in three of his last four away appearances for Utd in this season’s Europa League.

Prediction

Having benefitted from two late own-goals to force their way back into this tie from 2-0 down at Old Trafford, Sevilla are even lucky to still be coming into their home leg with a shot at the semi-finals after a difficult display against a dominant United team.

Utd meanwhile were absolutely dominant in their domestic league win at Forest just like they were at home to Sevilla, albeit with seveeral wasted chances so they better tidy up their end product if want to stand any chance of qualifying for the semi-finals.

In fact, Utd also must be wary of Sevilla’s home form in 2023 with just one defeat in nine matches – during which they’ve scored at least twice in eight of those games and kept five clean sheets, underlining just how tough a trip this will be for the Red Devils.

I though do fancy Utd to sneak through if they can play with the same dominant intensity as seen in recent games, but it is vital that they don’t underestimate Sevilla by any stretch.

Prediction: Sevilla 1-2 Manchester United

Result: Sevilla 3-0 Manchester United (Sevilla win 5-2 on aggregate!!)
