2022-23 Premier League: Week 28 – Everton vs Tottenham

Everton host Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park in a huge Monday Night Football clash at opposite ends of Premier League table.

Victory would see Everton climb out of the relegation zone and move up to 13th in the table, whilst Tottenham can go third with a win.

Everton have no fresh injury concerns to report following their 2-2 draw at Chelsea before the international break.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (hamstring) and Andros Townsend (knee) remain absent.

Tottenham will be without Emerson Royal after the Brazilian suffered a knee injury whilst on international duty for Brazil.

Ben Davies is also ruled out after he withdrew from Wales’ selection with a hamstring injury.

Hugo Lloris (knee), Ivan Perisic (calf) and Richarlison (muscle) are expected to be available for selection.

Ryan Sessegnon (hamstring), Rodrigo Bentancur (ACL) and Yves Bissouma (ankle) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Everton host Tottenham at 8pm BST on Monday 3 April at Goodison Park, live on Sky Sports in UK.

Stat Attack

  • Everton have won just one of their last five league meetings against Tottenham (W1, D2, L2).
  • Tottenham are unbeaten in their last nine league visits to Everton (W3, D6), since suffering a 2-1 loss in December 2012.
  • Everton haven’t held Spurs to consecutive 0-0 draws at Goodison Park since doing so in January 2008 and May 2009 respectively.
  • Since Sean Dyche arrived at Goodison Park, Everton have won three of their four home matches (W3, L1), with all three victories claimed by a 1-0 result.
  • Tottenham have scored in five of their six league matches away from home in 2023 (W2, D1, L3), except for a 1-0 loss at Wolves in early March.

Prediction

Stuck in a deep relegation fight and facing a series of tricky home games during the run-in, Everton need the perfect start here and should be buoyed by how well they performed at Chelsea in a 2-2 draw before the international break with clinical finishing and press amidst two sloppy defensive errors.

Everton’s away form meanwhile has been atrocious all season which only further emphasises how crucial it is that they at least get a draw here at minimum, especially given how tricky their remaining home games are right until end of the season.

Tottenham though are under interim management of Cristian Stellini following Antonio Conte’s sacking, with Stellini having already led them to three wins – albeit at home whilst Conte was on sick leave in February so I do expect them to come out full of confidence.

Their defensive implosion at Southampton however showed how vulnerable their ability is in terms of defending, whilst their end product was often wasteful except for three clinical goals in an eventual draw underlining how inconsistent their form has been since the World Cup break.

Stellini’s task on that note is to translate his successful coaching performance within Spurs’ home games into away matches, yet they are set to face a confident Everton team who know that a home win feels imperative so I do expect this to be a close battle with Tottenham possibly edging it.

Prediction: Everton 1-2 Tottenham

Result: Everton 1-1 Tottenham
