Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso has iterated that he is eager to ensure his “feet remain on the ground” ahead of 2023 Australian Grand Prix.
Alonso enter the third round of the current F1 season sat third in the driver standings with 30 points and just 14 points off Championship leader, Max Verstappen, having claimed a pair of third-placed finishes in the first two rounds of this campaign.
The two-time champion therefore is hopeful that he can “build on these results this weekend” in Melbourne, Australia.
Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were two “different” circuits in terms of characteristics but Alonso is keeping calm as he explained: “However, our feet remain on the ground and we are realistic that in order to keep scoring strong results we need to deliver in all areas of the team.”
On returning to Australia where he took victory in 2006 en-route to his second F1 title that season, Alonso admitted that he finds the Australian GP to be “always a fun race” to participate in, even though he suffered a huge accident in 2016 which forced him to skip the Bahrain Grand Prix that year.
This year will see a fourth DRS Zone introduced after previously only featuring in FP1 and FP2 last year on safety grounds, which excites Alonso as he added: “It is going to be even faster than last year and hopefully we will see more overtaking.”
The Spaniard though iterated that Qualifying could be key as can often be the case around Albert Park, as he described the Qualifying session as “pivotal” to ensuring a strong race.
Lance Stroll meanwhile echoed Alonso’s thoughts in heading to another circuit which is “different” to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, as the Canadian revealed that he is holding “no expectations” coming into the race weekend.
With F2 and F3 also in town for the first time, Stroll added that he expects the “cool track” to this time be a circuit “which evolves throughout the weekend as we lay down rubber.”
