2022-23 Premier League: Week 26 – Manchester United vs Southampton

Manchester United continue their top-four push with a home clash against relegation battling Southampton at Old Trafford.

Victory would see Man Utd stay third in the table, whilst a win would see Southampton climb out of the relegation zone if West Ham lose elsewhere.

Marcel Sabitzer could return for Man Utd if he passes a late fitness test after a knock kept him out of their 4-1 home win against Real Betis in UEFA Europa League.

Christian Eriksen (ankle), Donny van de Beek (knee), Anthony Martial (leg) and Mason Greenwood (personal) remain absent.

Southampton could be without last weekend’s match winner against Leicester – Carlos Alcaraz, after the midfielder suffered a knee injury but he will be handed a late fitness test.

Valentino Livramento (muscle) and Juan Larios (adductor) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Man Utd host Southampton at Old Trafford in a 2pm GMT kick-off on Sunday 12 March, albeit untelevised in the UK.

Stat Attack

Prediction

Following their shambolic seven-goal loss at Liverpool last weekend, Man Utd certainly bounced back in the first leg of their Europa League tie against Real Betis with a clinical dominant performance, which has to be a fresh platform for them to kick on for rest of season.

Southampton meanwhile are right in a relegation fight but if they can show the same grit and clinical counter-attacking end product as they did in their win over Leicester, they might just stand a chance of a smash-and-grab winner.

I though just can’t see them getting a result given their recent away form at Old Trafford and Utd’s current attacking confidence, which should comfortably dispatch a vulnerable Southampton defence – despite winning two of their last three games by 1-0 result.

Prediction: Manchester United 2-0 Southampton

Result: Manchester United 0-0 Southampton
