Aston Martin has unveiled AMR23 car for 2023 F1 season to be driven by Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.
Having returned to F1 in 2021 with Sebastian Vettel partnering Lance Stroll, Aston Martin now begin a new era as Stroll partners two-time champion, Fernando Alonso who moves across from Alpine after Vettel retired at end of 2022 season.
Aston Martin unveiled the AMR23 car at their new factory at Silverstone, in which they retained their green livery of last season, albeit with “significant development” to address their weaknesses and find more performance this season.
tweaks to the car in line with the stable technical regulations which have rolled over into this season aside from some updated rules.
Upon first glance of the car, Stroll exclaimed “It’s cool!” and iterated that they “can fight for good points and podiums” if the car has more pace than they had in a “difficult” start to last season.
Alonso meanwhile expressed his target as setting “a good baseline” from which the team can build upon going forward into the future, but admitted that they won’t be in a position “to win immediately” in an early warning towards fan expectations.
Stoffell Vandoorne meanwhile has moved from Mercedes to become Aston Martin’s new reserve driver following Nico Hulkenberg’s move to Haas, with the Belgian combining his role with his Formula E duties across the first half of this season.
Development driver and 2022 F2 champion, Felipe Drugovich will be closely involved with the team across the season, plus will step in as reserve driver on race weekends where Vandoorne is racing in Formula E.
Speaking at the AMR23 car launch in Aston Martin’s new factory at Silverstone, Team Principal – Mike Krack believes that the team made “great progress” from midway through last season, and added ahead of this new season that their “intention is to make a good step forward.”
Krack nevertheless admitted that their immediate aim is to “… fully deliver on its performance potential from the first moment it hits the track.”
On what will be needed to continue to Aston Martin’s ambition of competing at the front of grid against teams like Red Bull and Mercedes, Krack said: “Making a strong start to the year, and then maintaining that momentum, is necessary if we are to make further advances towards the front of the grid.”
