2022-23 Sky Bet Championship: Week 29 – Tuesday

Luton Town host Cardiff City at Kenilworth Road in a rearranged Sky Bet Championship clash.

Victory will see Luton realistically climb to fourth in the table, although a four-goal winning margin would see them improve even higher into third.

Cardiff meanwhile can improve one position from 21st to 20th in the table with a win, unless they win by six goals or more which would see them leapfrog Birmingham City into 19th position.

Reece Burke could start in defence for Luton if manager, Rob Edwards opts to rotate his squad following their 2-2 draw against Grimsby Town in the FA Cup last weekend.

Fred Onyedinma, Luke Berry and Cauley Woodrow are also looking for starts, after they were named as substitutes at the weekend.

Cardiff have no fresh injury concerns to report after their 1-0 home defeat to Millwall, as Romaine Sawyers looks to return to the starting line-up, having been named as an unused substitute against the Lions.

Jamilu Collins (knee), Oliver Denham (knock) and Mahlon Romeo (hamstring) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Luton will host Cardiff at Kenilworth Road in a 7:45pm GMT kick-off on Tuesday 31 January, with the match televised live on the Red Button on Sky Sports Football.

Stat Attack

  • Luton have won just two of their last six meetings against Cardiff (W2, L4).
  • Cardiff are unbeaten in their last five visits to Luton (W3, D2).
  • Each of Luton’s last five league goals against Cardiff have been scored after half-time.
  • Elijah Adebayo has scored in each of his last four appearances for Luton (W2, D1, L1).
  • Cardiff are winless in their last 11 matches in all competitions (D6, L5).

Prediction

Having begun Saturday’s FA Cup tie as firm favourites against Grimsby in which they put in an excellent attacking performance, Luton will be disappointed with how they defended so I do expect a serious response here aided by some fresh tweaks to the line-up.

Cardiff meanwhile do look a defensive sitting duck given their poor form which Luton should really target with an aggressive energetic attack, yet they are capable of nicking some solid goals here and there if can find consistency and stop wasting chances repeatedly.

This game though feels like a good chance for Cardiff to end their winless streak given their recent form but I feel like Luton could be too strong, especially if they can get in front and tidy up their defending given that they could easily go fourth and put pressure on their play-off rivals with a win.

Prediction: Luton 2-0 Cardiff

Result: Luton 1-0 Cardiff
