English Football League (EFL) have led sporting tributes following the death of Great Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II who has died aged 96.

Queen Elizabeth II (8 September) passed away “peacefully” at Balmoral, Scotland according to a statement from Buckingham Palace, with her eldest son – Charles now assuming the role of King Charles III.

Upon confirmation of her death, EFL Chairman, Rick Parry issued a public statement expressing sadness as he commented: “Today, the EFL was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty, The Queen Elizabeth II.

“Over a 70-year reign, Her Majesty proudly served the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth with distinction.โ€ฏ”

Parry went on to reflect on the Queen’s close connections with football and sport as he continued: “The Queen had a keen interest in sport including football. Her Majesty attended numerous FA Cup Finals throughout her reign and was an advocate for our national sport through her many years of service.

“The Monarch was at Wembley Stadium in 1966 for perhaps our national gameโ€™s most famous moment to present captain Bobby Moore with the Jules Rimet Trophy after England beat West Germany to win the World Cup.”

Parry proceeded to conclude his statement by sending condolsences to the Royal Family as he added: “On behalf of the League and its Clubs, we join the rest of the nation and people across the world in mourning the passing of our Queen, Elizabeth II.

“The thoughts of everybody at the EFL and our Clubs are with the Royal Family at this sad time for our country.”

On the subject of this weekend’s fixtures and those scheduled across the national period of mourning over the next 10 days, Parry iterated that considerations will be discussed with UK Government and other sports with “an appropriate announcement” to be made in due course.

The Premier League also issued their own tribute acknowledging how “deeply saddened” the organisation is concerning Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

FIFA meanwhile described the Queen’s death as the loss of a “lifelong supporter.”

“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth IIโ€™s passing is a huge loss to football, to our society, and to the world,โ€ commented FIFA President Gianni Infantino, as he issued a formal tribute in which he spoke of her impact inside and outside of football, as he said:

“To society, the Queen was a Head of State for a number of FIFAโ€™s Member Associations, and was an active patron of football across the United Kingdom and a supporter of our sport throughout the Commonwealth.
