2022-23 Premier League: Week Two – Brighton vs Newcastle

Brighton & Hove Albion welcome Newcastle United to Amex Stadium as both teams look to continue winning starts.

Following opening weekend victories, a win for either team will see them remain in the top half of the table.

Brighton have no fresh injury concerns to report after their shock win at Manchester United with only Jakub Moder absent, as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.

Newcastle could welcome Jamaal Lascelles back into contention after he suffered a knock to his thigh during warm-up, prior to their opening weekend win at home to Nottingham Forest.

Javier Manquillo (groin) is a doubt but Emil Krafth, Jonjo Shelvey (both hamstring), Federico Fernandez and Jamal Lewis (both calf) remain absent.

Stat Attack

  • Brighton have lost just one of 10 previous Premier League meetings against Newcastle (W4, D5, L1).
  • Newcastle are winless in five previous Premier League visits to Brighton (D3, L2).
  • Brighton have kept four clean sheets in their last six meetings against Newcastle (W2, D3, L1).
  • Pascal Gross has scored in each of Brighton’s last two home matches (W2).
  • Newcastle have kept just one disciplinary clean sheet in their last six away matches – in a 2-1 away victory at Burnley on final day of last season.

Prediction

Having had the summer off, Brighton have done well to pretty pick up where they finished in terms of their attacking quality, which had great pace and clinical finishing which Newcastle need to be wary of on top of the Seagulls’ defensive organisation.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies though are in for a tougher test of where their quality currently lies after having dominated their win over Forest, in which they showed huge improvement in all aspects of their play even if they were rather rash in their shot making at times.

Now if we see more of the performances saw last weekend, this surely is going to be an attacking battle which either will finish goalless or in a classy thriller, so I am going to play safe and go middle for diddle here.

Prediction: Brighton 1-1 Newcastle

Result: Brighton 0-0 Newcastle
