Norwich City have signed midfielder Marcelino Núñez from Chile’s Universidad Católica for an undisclosed fee.
Núñez began his career at Universidad Católica where he graduated through their youth academy and made his senior debut in February 2020, and since has gone on to score 12 goals in 83 appearances across all competitions for the Chilean club.
Núñez has signed a four-year contract until end of June 2026.
Explaining to canaries.co.uk why the Canaries have snooped for the 22 year-old midfielder, Head Coach – Dean Smith commented: “We’re really pleased to have Marcelino in. He’s a player that we believe can connect us from back to front.
“He can see a pass and open things up. He also scored some wonderful goals out in South America. His all-round game is one that we feel is going to suit us and what we’ve needed.”
Núñez meanwhile stated that he is “really happy” to join Norwich and is “excited” to make his debut at Carrow Road against Wigan live on Sky Sports on Saturday 6 August, in a 12:30pm kick-off subject to international clearance and a work permit being approved ahead of the game.
On what Norwich fans can expect from him at Carrow Road, Núñez said: “Well, I like to get into the box, I like to go for goal. I like to play in set-plays and be involved in and outside of the box.
“Now I’m here at Norwich, I have my objectives and I want to achieve everything that I can with the club.”
Núñez has also represented Chile’s senior international team since he was called up for 2021 Copa America and has gone on to earn 10 caps for his country, during which he netted just once which came against Bolivia in January in 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying.
Norwich have confirmed that Núñez will wear the number 26 shirt and becomes the first Chilean to sign for the Canaries.
