AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly is looking for “a special weekend” at his home race as F1 head to Circuit Paul Ricard for 2022 French Grand Prix.
Following a difficult Austrian GP weekend in which he failed to deliver a top ten challenge amidst continued Sprint woes, Gasly has admitted that AlphaTauri simply “… didn’t have the performance level we needed to fight,” for points.
Gasly though is now focused on his home race at Circuit Paul Ricard, France, this weekend between 22-24 July where AlphaTauri are set to bring upgrades in hope of improving their performance levels.
Explaining exactly what fresh upgrades are set to be on the car this weekend, Gasly said: “They are mainly on the aero-side and they should deliver a real step up in performance, so I’m keen to try them out at Ricard, in the hope that they can put us back in the fight for points.”
Gasly also added that he is excited to get racing at Circuit Paul Ricard given questions surrounding the future of the French GP, as he commented: “It’s a special weekend as it’s my home race, particularly this year as there is some uncertainty over the future of the French Grand Prix.
“We are not sure if it stays on the calendar or not for next year, so I want to enjoy the moment and share it with all my fans, supporters and French F1 racing enthusiasts.”
There will also be a ‘Gasly Grandstand’ at the chicane on the back straight covering Turns Eight and Nine which the 26 year-old Frenchman is excited about, as he described the opportunity to “do something a bit more personal” and connective with fans as a “nice” treat”
On his aims for the weekend, Gasly spoke of his wish for “a good atmosphere” as he hopes that AlphaTauri are able “… to deliver a good result in front of the French crowd.”
Even if this year is the last French GP, Gasly will remain on the grid in 2023 after signing a new contract at AlphaTauri last month.
