Scottish Premiership’s Rangers have signed defender, Ben Davies from Liverpool for a £4m transfer fee.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Gers will pay an initial £3m transfer fee with a further £1m included in add-ons, which takes the total transfer fee to £4m with Davies having signed a four-year contract at Ibrox until June 2026.
Speaking about his move to Rangers after just 18 months at Liverpool following his switch from Preston North End, Davies commented: “I am very excited to join Rangers and I am really looking forward to taking this next step in my career.”
Van Bronckhorst added that he is “delighted” to sign the 26 year-old defender who he described as “strong” and boasts “great qualities” within their defence.
Rangers’ Sporting Director, Ross Wilson echoed Van Bronckhorst’s “delighted” feeling on Davies’ arrival, as he added that both manager and coaching staff are excited about working with Davies heading into the new season.
Davies’ departure from Anfield came after he failed to make a single senior appearance for Liverpool despite being named as a substitute on eight occasions, prior to a loan spell at Sheffield United last season where he scored one goal in 23 appearances.
Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp though believes that Davies’ transfer is a “super move” for the defender despite having never given him game time for the Reds.
Klopp went on to explain that he is confident that Davies will suit Rangers as he added: “Rangers is a fantastic club, a big club. Ben belongs on a big stage for sure. European football as well. This presents a proper opportunity to demonstrate his quality and composure.”
On what Rangers will get out of Davies across the next four seasons, Klopp continued: “It’s a smart piece of recruitment from Giovanni van Bronckhorst, to be honest. Perfect for all parties.
“He has himself an accomplished defender, who is entering his peak years and whose character is top drawer.”
Klopp nevertheless concluded by wishing Davies well for the future after a difficult spell on Merseyside as he commented: “We wish Ben nothing but the success he deserves and will be following from here as he goes on to make many achievements during the rest of his career.”
Davies could make his debut for Rangers on Saturday in their final pre-season friendly against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday 23 July, whilst his competitive debut could come away to Livingston on 30 July on the opening weekend of 2022-23 Scottish Premiership season.
