Midfielder, Katie Zelem has signed a new two-year contract to remain at Manchester United until June 2024.

Zelem began her career at Utd’s Centre of Excellence between 2004-13 but due to Utd lacking a senior women’s team at the time, she commenced her professional career at Liverpool where she scored 12 goals in 52 appearances in a four-year spell.

A move to Juventus followed in 2017 where she netted six goals in 22 appearances in an one-year spell at the club, before she returned to Man Utd who had set up a women’s team ahead of 2018-19 season.

That first campaign proved successful as United clinched promotion from FA Women’s Championship to Women’s Super League (WSL) as champions, during which Zelem contributed 11 goals in 26 appearances.

Zelem has since gone on to play a key role in Utd’s progress up the WSL ladder with 16 goals in 73 appearances across the last three seasons in all competitions, whilst also serving as club captain following their promotion to the WSL.

Speaking about her decision to sign a new two-year contract, Zelem said: “I’m delighted to extend my contract here at United. Being captain of this wonderful football club is a privilege and something that I am honoured to continue into another exciting season for this group of players.

“I want to thank the fans for all their support since I joined in 2018 and look forward to making more winning memories together.”

Utd Women manager, Marc Skinner added that he is “delighted” to retain Zelem who he is confident of displaying “… the values and qualities to captain this team.”

Skinner also praised the 26 year-old for her ability to develop her game and motivate teammates, as he added: “Katie showed last season that she possesses the character to consistently challenge and improve herself, whilst pushing her team-mates to do the same.”
