Martin Payero has joined Boca Juniors on a season-long loan from Middlesbrough for 2022-23 season.

Argentina’s Payero began his career playing for Banfield where he scored twice in 43 appearances between 2017-21 seasons, amidst a loan stint at Talleres in 2019-20 season where he netted just one goal in 18 appearances.

The Argentinean midfielder however impressed Middlesbrough with his performances which led to the Teesside club signing him on a three-year deal in August 2021.

Payero however struggled to adapt to life in English football with just one goal in 14 appearances across all competitions, during which he scored his only goal in a 2-0 away Championship win at Cardiff last October.

The 23 year-old was also involved in Boro’s shock penalty shootout victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford in early February, in the Fourth Round of 2021-22 FA Cup as Middlesbrough ultimately reached the Quarter-Finals where they lost to Chelsea 2-0 at home.

Manager, Chris Wilder though has decided to let Payero leave on loan this season, which has led the midfielder to return to his home country to play for Boca Juniors.

Speaking about his loan move to Boca, Payero said: “Today I am here in Boca, I am happy for this situation. Today I can think about that, be with my teammates, I want to live up to what the Boca World is. Tomorrow I will meet with everyone, I come to contribute from my place.”

Payero also reflected on his single season playing in English football as he added: “I think what I take most from Europe is the physical part, playing in an intense, competitive league.

“That’s what I’ve incorporated well, then football has led me to that. I like to assist, to help on the offensive side. That’s what I come to contribute.”

Payero could make his Boca debut on Saturday 16 July away to his former loan team, Talleres in Argentina’s Primera Division.
