England’s Harry Kane has spoken out of his belief that the Three Lions lacked a “cutting edge” in UEFA Nations League action in June 2022.
This month saw England pick up just two points from a maximum potential haul of 12 points in Group 3 of League A in 2022-23 UEFA Nations League, following draws against Germany and Italy in-between defeats to Hungary away and at home.
Last night’s (14 June) performance though was disastrous as England conceded four goals and were reduced to 10 men in their worst home loss in 94 years, since suffering a 5-1 defeat to Scotland in 1928.
Kane was the only starting forward to complete the entire match but he couldn’t deny his embarrassment at what “a disappointing night,” it was for the team with just two of ten shots converted onto target which he summed up as typical of their four group matches so far.
The 28 year-old proceeded to describe the display as “unacceptable” without any “cutting edge” to their attacking intent.
He however urged fans to not start panicking about their World Cup prospects in a group where they will face Iran, USA and Wales, as he said: “It’s not time to panic, it’s time to keep our heads up. I look forward to a break now and then we’ll come back stronger in September.”
Kane also insisted that this camp also formed part of wider preparations for the tournament in Qatar as he added: “At the end of the day, we are preparing for what is going to be a big World Cup and that’s the most important thing.
“We’ll learn a lot from this camp and put it into our game for September.”
Kane also offered additional reassurance to the fans by admitting that he understands their “frustration” because the squad want to win every match, yet iterated going into two must-win Nations League matches in September that “it’s not going to be perfect every game.”
England will next be in action on 23 September away to Italy in Milan where defeat would confirm relegation to League B.
