Bayern Munich have signed Georgia Stanway on a three-year contract from Manchester City.
Stanway first joined Man City in July 2015 from Blackburn Rovers and since went on to score 67 goals in 186 appearances across all competitions, during which she won three Women’s FA Cup and League Cup titles as well as one Women’s Super League title.
Her 67 goals also sees the 23 year-old depart the Academy Stadium as City’s all-time leading female goalscorer, having signed a three-year contract with Bayern until June 2025.
Speaking about her decision to move aboard to play for Bayern Munich in Germany’s Frauen-Bundesliga, Stanway admitted that the move “felt right” following initial conversations with the German club in which her instincts led her to believe that she belonged in Munich.
Stanway also praised Bayern for having “very big ambitions” which she admires as the club look to chase Women’s Champions League success, having reached the semi-finals of last season’s competition where they lost to eventual runners-up, Chelsea.
As for her ambitions with Bayern, Stanway commented: “On the pitch, of course, I want to win titles. It’s as simple as that (laughs)!
“Next to the square, I’m looking forward to getting to know a new city and a new language. I’m looking forward to making new friends and can’t wait to show my family Munich as well.”
Bayern Women Sporting Director, Bianca Rech meanwhile added that the club were “very pleased” to sign Stanway.
Explaining why Bayern decided to lure Stanway to Munich, Rech said: “She is a very flexible, goal-scoring player and is also characterized by her mentality. Furthermore, it is a great sign and positive signal for the league that an English player has chosen Germany and FC Bayern,” in an ambitious move.
Man City meanwhile issued the following statement on Stanway’s departure: “Everybody at Manchester City would like to thank Georgia for her contributions during her seven years here and wish her the best for the future.”
Stanway’s final appearance for City came in Sunday’s Women’s FA Cup Final where the Citizens lost 3-2 to Chelsea after extra-time at Wembley Stadium, in which the England international was substituted in the 80th minute for Lauren Coombs.
