Gareth Southgate Drops Five Players For England Friendlies

Gareth Southgate has opted to drop five players for England’s friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast in March 2022.

Southgate has opted to retain Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale in goal but has dropped Sam Johnstone and instead recalled Burnley’s Nick Pope to the senior squad.

Pickford’s inclusion though is a slight surprise following his slump in form for Everton, which has left the Toffees in a relegation battle as the Merseyside club look to maintain their Premier League status.

Ben Chilwell misses out in defence as he continues his recovery from a knee injury which will keep him out for the rest of this season, with the 25 year-old replaced by Crystal Palace defender, Marc Guehi.

Kyle Walker has also been omitted in defence as Arsenal’s Ben White is handed a recall after impressing for the Gunners in recent months.

Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips meanwhile is absent in midfield as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury with Palace loanee – Conor Gallagher handed a first proper senior call-up, having previously been named as a replacement call-up for England’s victory at San Marino in November.

Up front, Marcus Rashford has been snubbed in attack following his drop in form for Manchester United during which he has only started three goals in 2022.

Emile Smith Rowe has consequently retained his place in the squad from England’s last match, which saw them secure World Cup qualification in San Marino, as Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling return after missing that game through injury.

Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions will host Switzerland on Saturday 26 March in a 5:30pm GMT kick-off before taking on Ivory Coast on Tuesday 29 March at 7:45pm BST, with both matches being played at Wembley Stadium.
