Richard Verschoor has switched from MP Motorsport to Trident for the 2022 F2 season.

Verschoor’s move to Trident comes after he enjoyed a successful rookie campaign last season with one race victory at Silverstone, only for budget issues to curtail his time at MP Motorsport prior to the final two rounds of the season.

Charouz however handed the Dutchman a call-up for the final round in Abu Dhabi, after Enzo Fittipaldi suffered a serious injury in the final race of the Saudi Arabia round.

Verschoor consequently finished 11th in the championship after being pipped to tenth by Ralph Boschung by only 3.5 points, which meant that he was the fourth best rookie driver overall across 2022 F2 season.

Speaking about his opportunity to remain in F2 with Trident, the 21 year-old said: “I’m extremely proud and motivated to join a highly-professional and winning team like Trident Motorsport for the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship.

“I think we have all conditions needed to achieve important goals and experience a positive season. I cannot wait to get on track. I will give my best to take full advantage of this great opportunity.”

Trident Team Principal, Giacomo Ricci added that he is “proud” to welcome Verschoor as he acknowledged Verschoor’s previous success including; titles in SMP F4 and Spanish F4 in 2016 plus 2019 Macau Grand Prix race victory.

Ricci also iterated his confidence that Verschoor is their type of “motivated” driver who can help the team achieve “outstanding goals” across the season.

Verschoor will partner rookie, Calan Williams at Trident which Ricci hopes will enable Trident to progress as he added: “I think Verschoor and Williams will be an extremely solid and promising combination, and they will keep pushing each other to the next level, laying the conditions for a successful season.”

Confirmation of Verschoor’s seat also means that the 2022 F2 grid is now complete with 16 drivers who completed at least one race last season returning to the grid.
