Zak O’Sullivan has been signed to Williams Driver Academy and will join Carlin for 2022 F3 season.

O’Sullivan who hails from Cheltenham has enjoyed a strong rise up the single-seater ladder after finishing as vice-champion in 2019 Ginetta Junior Championship and 2020 British F4, before dominating 2021 GB3 season to win the title with seven wins and 14 podiums in total.

Williams have now signed the 16 year-old to their Driver Academy which currently contains fellow Brits – Jamie Chadwick and Jack Aitken plus Israel’s Roy Nissany and USA’s Logan Sargeant.

Speaking highly of feeling “honoured” to join Williams’ Drive Academy, O’Sullivan said: “This is an incredible opportunity and I can’t thank Jost, Sven and the whole team enough for their faith in me.”

“Williams Racing is one of the most successful and respected teams in Formula One and have nurtured some of the greatest talents in the sport, I am really looking forward to getting started.”

Williams’ Sporting Director, Sven Smeets added that Williams “are all very pleased” to welcome O’Sullivan to the Academy, whilst praising his title-winning GB3 campaign of last season as evidence of “his natural talent” plus “capability, drive and professionalism” after driving Williams’ simulator.

In his role at Williams, O’Sullivan will ‘play a key role in car development with his work in the simulator’ whilst the team support him in his development as a racing driver.

O’Sullivan will also drive for Carlin in F3 this season after successfully testing for the team in the 2021 Post-Season Test.

Speaking about his graduation into F3, O’Sullivan said: “I’m so pleased to be continuing my strong relationship with Carlin and stepping up to FIA F3 with them this season.

“This will be my third year working with the team and I am looking forward to the exciting challenge ahead. Thank you as always to Trevor and the team for their ongoing support in my career.”

Carlin Team Principal, Trevor Carlin meanwhile is “delighted” that Williams have signed O’Sullivan to their Academy, whilst also allowing him to stay at Carlin as he moves up to F3.

Teasing what will be expected of O’Sullivan this season, Carlin commented: “We’ve enjoyed two very successful seasons together so we know exactly how much effort and dedication Zak puts into everything he does.

“I know that he’s going to be using that same approach this year and we’ll be fighting hard so that together we can deliver.”
