West Bromwich Albion has signed Andy Carroll on a free transfer from Reading until end of 2021-22 season.

Carroll’s free move to West Brom comes after a successful two month stint at Reading for the often injury-prone striker, during which he scored twice in eight appearances for the Royals.

Valerien Ismael’s decision to bring Carroll to The Hawthorns also comes just days after Daryl Dike was ruled out with a hamstring injury for up to eight weeks, as West Brom continue to fight for promotion despite losing 2-0 at home to Preston in midweek.

Explaining the club’s decision to sign Carroll on a short-term contract until end of the current season, Ismael said: “Andy is a player who is able to help us straight away. He is ready and brings with him all the attributes we need. It could be a win-win situation for us.”

Ismael also noted that Carroll’s performances for Reading is another positive, as he added: “The fact Andy has played plenty of games for Reading recently is great. He’s fit after playing those games and he’s scored goals during that short-term deal. Hopefully Andy can now score goals for us.”

Dike’s injury also played a part in Ismael’s decision to sign a new striker to bolster the Baggies’ attacking options, as the ex Barnsley manager stated that Dike was “a big loss,” which necessitated a review of the forward selection.

Ismael therefore felt that extra cover was important in case of further injuries up front despite Dike being the biggest loss in terms of impact, as he continued: “We needed to replace him, and we are pleased to welcome Andy who has a lot of experience.”

Carroll’s previous experience includes two spells for Newcastle United either side of stints at Liverpool and West Brom, as well as a short tenure at Reading, with the 33 year-old having scored 82 goals in 354 club appearances.

Carroll has also netted twice in nine senior appearances for England and is eligible to make his West Brom debut away against Millwall tomorrow (29 January).
