Singapore Grand Prix Remains On F1 Calendar Until 2028

Formula One has announced that Singapore Grand Prix will remain on the calendar until the end of the 2028 season.

This announcement comes as Marina Bay Street Circuit prepares to return to the F1 calendar across the weekend of 30 September – 2 October 2022, following a two-year absence due to the Coronavirus pandemic which saw F1 not visit Singapore since 2019.

This ‘multi-year extension’ to their contract means that F1 will head to Singapore for seven further races from 2022 to 2028.

Speaking about the decision to hand Singapore a new seven-season contract including the 2022 season, F1 President and CEO, Stefano Domenicali said that he is “delighted” that F1 will be back racing in Singapore which “holds a special place on the F1 calendar” as a night race.

Domenicali also iterated that this contract extension forms “part of our long-term commitment to continue to grow the sport in Asia.”

Sustainability will also play a huge part in future Singapore Grands Prix as Singapore GP Pte Ltd and Singapore Tourism Board vowed to work together in order ‘to reduce the carbon footprint’ produced across the race weekend in line with sustainability goals of F1.

Speaking about this new approach, Domenicali added: “The plans that are in place to reduce the carbon footprint of the event are impressive and align with our plans to be Net Zero Carbon as a sport by 2030 and I look forward to continuing our successful relationship with Singapore GP and the Singapore Tourism Board as Formula 1 returns to this incredible city.”

Singapore GP Chairman, Mr Ong Beng Seng meanwhile added that he and the race promoter “are very pleased” to renew their F1 contract and seek to build on the race’s success which was halted by the Coronavirus pandemic in last two seasons.

Seng also added that he can’t wait to welcome local and international spectators back as Singapore continues to recover from the pandemic, as he said: “We are delighted that this marquee event will demonstrate how Singapore is open for business.

“We look forward to welcoming both local and overseas fans and visitors to the Marina Bay Street Circuit once again.”

Sebastian Vettel will head to Marina Bay as the reigning Singapore Grand Prix winner after winning the 2019 event for Ferrari, although he has since moved on to Aston Martin.

This announcement also comes just a day after F1 confirmed their pre-season testing plans for 2022 season spread across Spain and Bahrain.
