Aston Villa have signed Lucas Digne from Everton in a £25m deal for the French left-back.

Digne joins Aston Villa following speculation initially linking him to Newcastle United, following a falling out with Everton manager Rafael Benitez in recent months.

“It was the main factor. I came here for the manager,” commented Digne after revealing that he was impressed by Head Coach – Steven Gerrard and his future plans for the club following discussions.

Explaining his decision to move to Villa Park, Digne added: “I had a very good meeting with him and we spoke a couple of times during this month. I feel his desire to win, to show his football as a manager – the attacking football, the possession.

“I feel it’s what I want and what I want to show to the fans.”

Digne also pointed to the loan signing of Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona as evidence of Villa’s “big project” on top of a financial spending spree last summer following the sale of Jack Grealish to Manchester City in a £100m deal.

Teasing what fans can expect from the club’s project, Digne commented: “The project is really interesting. You can see from last summer that the project is in a good way, and I think all the players want to be here to be part of this project.”

Gerrard meanwhile revealed that Villa “jumped at the opportunity” to sign Digne once he became available for transfer.

“To sign a player of his pedigree and quality in the January window is a great addition to our squad and his arrival excites me and everyone associated with Aston Villa.” added Gerrard.

Digne will wear the number 27 shirt at Villa and could make his debut live at Villa Park this Saturday (15 January 2022) as Villa host Manchester United live on Sky Sports from 5:30pm GMT.
